Frequently Asked Questions

Who can prescribe highly specialised drugs (s100) for hepatitis B?

Prescriber Program

A) Practitioners in hospital settings

To prescribe HSDs under the PBS, a prescriber must be:

Affiliated with the hospital the patient is receiving treatment from and be either:

  • a staff hospital specialist, or
  • a visiting or consulting specialist of the hospital

    Source

An eligible medical practitioner in a public or private hospital may prescribe HSDs.

      Source

      B) Accredited prescribers under community access arrangements

You can prescribe under these arrangements if you are:

      • a hospital-based prescriber or general practitioner, and
      • an accredited prescriber of that medication

You do not have to be affiliated with a public or private hospital. The medications you can prescribe under the arrangements are:

      • HIV ART for initial and maintenance therapy
      • hepatitis B items for initial and maintenance therapy, and
      • clozapine for maintenance therapy only

      Source

      C) GPs who are NOT s100 prescribers, in very limited situations:

      • in circumstances where it is impractical for the patient to see a specialist (e.g. rural/remote)
      • maintenance therapy only (not initiation)
      • with agreement from a specialist

a medical practitioner prescribing maintenance therapy when it is impractical to get a prescription from the treating affiliated specialist medical practitioner and the specialist has agreed to the prescription

      Source

However, if you are affiliated with the hospital the patient is receiving treatment from and are either:

      • a staff hospital specialist, or
      • a visiting or consulting specialist of the hospital – you do not require a HBV s100 accreditation.

ASHM’s prescriber maps provide up-to-date information on the location and contact details of PrEP prescribers, and accredited prescribers for the management and treatment of hepatitis B, and HIV across all states and territories in Australia.

Please note that the maps operate on a voluntary participation basis and do not represent a comprehensive list of all accredited s100 or PrEP prescribers.

      Prescriber Program

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a section 85 (s85) medication, which means any medical or nurse practitioner in Australia can prescribe PrEP by following the National ASHM PrEP Guidelines.

I have a lot of experience working in HIV/AIDS overseas and I’ve now moved to Australia. How can I prescribe HIV treatment here?

      Prescriber Program

As an alternative to attending the HIV s100 Accredited Prescriber Course, General Practitioners (GPs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs) may apply for HIV s100 prescribing rights by demonstrating evidence of prior experience in the management of HIV.

Applications are considered individually and usually require substantial supporting evidence, such as your medical CV, 2–3 years of supervisor reports demonstrating experience with HIV case-loads, and/or evidence of prescribing authorisation in another country.

Please email your details and supporting evidence of prior experience to [email protected]. ASHM will notify you once your application is received and will forward the application and supporting documents to the National HIV Standards Training and Accreditation Committee for review and assessment.
